A contribution to understanding the triggers and causes of violence and division in contemporary Sudan

Despite the rising interest in Sudan as a subject of inquiry in recent years, little is known about the role of identity in the causes and triggers of conflict in the country.

Emphasis upon the contemporary conflict in Dar Fur has overlooked the persisting tensions between the government and the Southern People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A), while investigations into the nearly 50 year civil war have tended to understand the conflict in dichotomous terms that do not match the complexity of the situation on the ground.

This study offers an historical and case study approach to analyze the triggers and causes of violence and division in modern Sudan through categories of social and economic exclusion based on forced state building, unequal access to markets, the continuation of a tribal economy, and the encouragement of antagonistic perceptions of competing groups, which serve to construct competing identities within the country.

The study adds nuance to our understanding of conflict in Sudan by relating the causes and triggers of conflict in Sudan to the construction of different identities within a nation-state.

By approaching the broader notion of conflict in the country from this perspective, particular insight is given into the viability of current and future peace agreements and the prospect of peace in the future of Sudan.
