In view of the enclosure and autarchy of mountainous regions in Morocco, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Interior along with the cooperation of the French government in 1983 initiated a program to develop and open up the High Atlas Mountains (Projet Haut Atlas Central or P.

C’s main strategy was to develop tourism in the mountains as an effective economic lever for the residents.

Among the activities of this project are the opening of a center for professional training for guides in Tabant, the building of guest houses for tourists and the development of complementary activities in the domain of agriculture and rural crafts.

Very quickly, tourism has proven to be an efficient economic alternative for local people and increasing number of families became involved in the activity.

This study examines the impact of tourism development in the High Atlas region (Toubkal region) in the douar Aremd.

It addresses the socio-economic disparities and more specifically the problems of equity engendered as a result of tourism development.
