الملخص الإنجليزي
Domestic tragedy is a social or human dilemma in which the protagonists could be both royalties and ordinary people.
This can be seen in the classical, Renaissance, or modern plays in which the protagonists may be kingly or lower class.
Thus, it tackles the lives of those who suffer from an acute problem within the frame of the family.
The destruction they bear as a result of the tragic end may affect the destinies of individuals, families, a whole state or kingdom.
This study provides a model for reading domestic tragedy and a theoretical framework for examining the role of the women in it.
It consists of four chapters and a conclusion.
The introductory chapter is a study of the genre.
It gives a definition of domestic tragedy, its historical background, critical views on domestic tragedy, and the role of women characters in domestic tragedy.
There will be also an extended reference to the special quality of this topic that makes audiences or readers attracted to it and to prominent dramatic works in the past and present that dealt with this issue.
Each of the other three chapters respectively discusses one play focusing on the theme and the role of the mother/wife characters in domestic tragedy.
Chapter two analyzes Sophocles' Oedipus the King which represents the Athenian tragedy focusing on the role of the mother and wife character in the play.
Chapter three tackles Shakespeare's Othello through the suffering brought about to women characters as victims of their husbands' jealousy or action which lead at the end to their tragic ends.
The fourth chapter studies O'Casey's Juno and the Paycock, especially the situation of the Irish families as weak and incapable of dealing with the acute problems of civil war and life, by focusing on their female characters who finally suffer the consequences.
The conclusion tries to summarize the results reached at in the discussions with an endevour to show the differences among the reasons that lead to domestic tragedy in each play and presents the common features that can be found among these plays.
The method used in the project can mainly be described as textual, critical, and comparative approach relying mainly on texts of plays as primary sources and available critical literature produced on them as secondary sources
