الملخص الإنجليزي

In this study fifty seven patients with breast tumors (28 patients aged 20-65years for benign breast tumors, and 29 patients aged 33-71years for malignant breast tumors) involved in this study during their admission different hospitals in Al- Najaf City.

The samples were obtained during the period from October 2004 to July 2006.

Age matched 30 healthy women also included in the study to be used as control group.

Sera, as well as different breast tissues, were used as samples of the present study.

The measured parameters in serum included:-Total protein, albumin, triacylglycerol, total cholesterol and its different fractions, ceruloplasmin concentration, activity of ceruloplasmin (oxidase & Ferroxidase), and alkaline phosphatase, as well as the concentration of trace elements (copper, iron and zinc), transferrin, and total iron binding capacity.

While those measured in breast tissues samples were:- total protein, ceruloplasmin concentration, ceruloplasmin oxidase activity, alkaline phosphatase activity, and some trace elements (copper, iron and zinc). The methods used for their determination were described in the materials and methods chapter.

In addition to that a histochemical study was carried out that included histochemical demonstrations of lipoprotein lipase and iron in liver (as positive control) and in malignant breast tissues.

The results showed the following: 1.

For malignant breast tumors group: A.

In Serum: 1.A significant decrease in:- [globulin], [HDL-C], [iron], [zinc], and TIBC at (P<0.05) and in: [total protein], [albumin], [transferrin], [copper]/[ceruloplasmin] ratio, and UIBC at (P<0.001) when compared with their corresponding control group.

XIV 2.

A significant increase in:- [Total cholesterol], [([TC]/[HDL-C]) and ([LDL-C]/[HDL-C]) ratios at (P<0.05), and in: [LDL-C], [ceruloplasmin], [copper], ceruloplasmin activities (oxidase and Ferroxidase) as well as its specific activities, alkaline phosphatase activity and its specific activity at (P<0.001) when compared with their corresponding control group.

3.

Non significant differences in:- [albumin]/[globulin] ratio, [triacylglycerol] and [VLDL-C] at (P>0.05) when compared with control group.

B.

In Breast Tissue: 1.

A significant decrease in [total protein] at (P<0.05), and in: [iron], and [copper]/[ceruloplasmin] ratio at (P<0.001) when compared with normal breast tissues group.

2.A significant increase in:- [ceruloplasmin] and ceruloplasmin oxidase activity, ceruloplasmin oxidase specific activity, [copper], [zinc], as well as alkaline phosphatase activity, and its specific activity at (P<0.001) when compared with normal breast tissues group.

3.

Non significant differences between benign and cancerous breast tissues groups (P>0.05) in: [total protein], specific activity of ceruloplasmin, and [copper]/[ceruloplasmin] ratio when compared with normal breast tissues group.

4.

The histochemical study of lipoprotein lipase in malignant tumors of mammary gland demonstrated that this enzyme did not exhibit any activity.

While little ferric iron granular reaction was observed in the malignant mammary gland as compared to the massive one in the liver.

XV 2.

For benign breast tumors group: A.

In Serum: 1.

A decrease in: -globulin concentration at (P<0.05), and in: [total protein], cholesterol ratios ([TC]/[HDL-C] & [LDL-C]/[HDL-C] ratios) at (P<0.001) when compared with control group.

2.

An increase in [cholesterol], and [LDL-C] at (P<0.05) when compared with control group.

3.

Non significant differences at (P>0.05) in: [albumin], [triglyceride], [HDL-C], [VLDL-C], [ceruloplasmin], [copper], [iron], [zinc] [albumin]/[globulin] ratio, [copper]/[ceruloplasmin] ratio, ceruloplasmin oxidase and its specific activity, ceruloplasmin ferroxidase activity and its specific activity, [transferrin], TIBC, UIBC, saturation percentage of transferrin with iron, Alkaline phosphatase activity and its specific activity, when compared with control group.

B.

In Breast Tissue: 1.

An increase at (P<0.05) in: [ceruloplasmin], ceruloplasmin oxidase activity and its specific activity, specific activity of alkaline phosphatase, and [zinc] when compared with normal breast tissues group.

2.A decrease at (P<0.05) in tissue iron levels when compared with normal breast tissues group, and at (P<0.001) in [copper]/[ceruloplasmin] ratio when compared with normal breast tissues group.
