الملخص الإنجليزي

The study was conducted on red cabbage which belongs to Cruciferae and genus Brassica .

The active compounds in the red cabbage were studied using different methods of extraction, spectroscopical analysis, thin layer chromatography (TLC) and high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC).

Phytochemical analysis investigated presence of phenolices, flavonoids, flavanols and anthocyanine compounds.

The protective effect of red cabbage extracts against oxidative stress in hyperthyroid rabbits induced by L-thyroxine was studied.

Forty animals were divided randomly into four groups.

Group 1: Healthy euthyroid rabbits, Group 2: healthy rabbits were given an oral dose of (20μg/kg.b.w) L-thyroxine once daily for four weeks to induce hyperthyroidism.

Group 3: hyperthyroid rabbits were received (20 mg/kg b.w) vitamine E.

and group 4: hyperthyroid rabbits received (100 mg/kg.b.w) red cabbage extract.

At the end 28 days, blood samples were taken for biochemical analysis.

The obtained results revealed that hyperthyroid rabbits induced by L-thyroxine had significant increase (P<0.01) in serum levels of triiodothyronine (T3),Thyroxine(T4),interlukin-6(IL- 6),interleukin 10(IL- 10),tumor necrosis factor-alpha(TNF-α),lipid peroxidation marker malondialdehyde (MDA), as well as significant decrease in reduced levels of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) ,glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) enzymes, compared with healthy group.

Oral administration of red cabbage extract caused significant reduction(p<0.01) in serum levels of T3,T4.IL-10, IL6, TNF-α as well as MDA and produced significant increase in TSH ,GSH GPX, SOD and CAT, compared with hyperthyroid rabbits without treatment.

The levels of IL-6 and IL-10 positively XII correlated with serum T3 and T4 but not with serum TSH.

Also, a highly positive correlation was found between IL-6 and 1L-10 in the hyperthyroid groups.

On the other hand significant increase in serum AST, ALT and ALP were noted in hyperthyroidism animals (P<0.001), and abnormal pattern in lipid profile was seen, while treatment with red cabbage extract levels turned back to the baseline values.

Oral administration of extract or intraperitoneal vitamin E administration to hyperthyroid animals led to a reduction in lipid peroxidation and a significant increase in antioxidant level.

These results suggested that vitamin E protects hyperthyroid animals against lipid peroxidation by mechanisms that may be independent of the changes in antioxidant system.

The histometrical results showed that the number of thyroid follicles, active follicles and follicles with vacuolated colloid were significantly increased in hyperthyroid animal after administration thyroxine (p < 0.01).However, the results showed that the parenchyma of thyroid glands was significantly increased in association with the increase in thyroid activity, the ratio of paranchyma to stroma was significantly higher in hyperthyroid rabbits treated with thyroxine, compared with healthy euthyroid rabbits, while oral administration of extract changed the pattern of hyperactivity in thyroid follicle to hypoactivity and protected it from oxidative damage .

Red cabbage treatment suppressed the hyperthyroidism-induced oxidative damage.

These results might be suggested that experimentally hyperthyroid animals were accompanied with increased oxidative stress with consumption of antioxidant enzymes in induced oxidative aggressions.

Protective effects of red cabbage extract on oxidative stress XIII induced by excessive administration of thyroid hormones were detected and for the first time antihyperthyroid activity was observed.

Therefore this study recommended increased dietary intake of red cabbage which may be beneficial for patients with hyperthyroidism.
