الملخص الإنجليزي

The aim of current study is estimate the ability of low cost adsorbents, which consist of plant wastes (rice husk, date seeds and corn cobs) in treatment of Industrial waste water that contains heavy metals (Cr, Ni and Zn) with other pollutants by fixed filters technique with determine the best method for that, and study the effect of a number of variables and parameters.

This study involved three waste water samples were collected from electroplating unit (before and after treatment unit) of the State Company for Electrical Industries (SCEI) at March 2012.

All of the chemical and physical measurement were done for samples of industrial waste water before and after treatment that was treated by the treatment unit in (SCEI), and also after treating by adsorbents such as Cr, Ni, Zn, pH, TDS, TSS, TH, COD and EC.

Moreover, the current work has examined the impact of various environmental variables such as pH values and contact time, and other variables such as modification of adsorbents by HCl acid, adsorbents height in the column (25 and 35cm), adsorbents particle size(4mm and 6mm), multi-metal ions system (industrial waste water) and single metal ions aqueous system.

On the other hand, laboratory columns design of the adsorption studies were carried out in transparent glass columns.

these columns were used individually to estimate the efficiency of adsorbents for heavy metals removal.

Then, the columns were connected together as sequential columns system to determine total efficiency of adsorbents.

after that, the columns was carried out as a filter cake and as a mixed system.

Furthermore, box – Wilson design method with second - order polynomial mathematical model was conducted in application of adsorption experimental studies for first group of columns.

In addition, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis and Microscopic morphology examinations were conducted.

Finally, the work has involved regeneration and reused processes for plant wastes four times by rinsing and reloading to provide an effective and economically viable treatment for industrial waste water.

The obtained results showed the following 1-Physical and chemical analysis of industrial waste water after treatment by adsorbents showed decrease in the values of TDS, TSS, T.H, E.C and COD up to half compared with the results of treatment unit in (SCEI).

2-Adsorption experimental studies showed that there are differences but not wide between abilities for Cr, Ni and Zn removal by non- modified and modified plant wastes with HCl (10%),.

For particle size of adsorbents, Adsorption process achieved with the particle size 4 mm that was best, the factor height of the adsorbents in the column has effect on adsorption process.

3- Adsorption tests showed all tested adsorbent materials had a significant heavy metal removal efficiency.

pH values showed clear impact upon adsorption process, but best removal efficiency occurred at pH 5.4 and 6.5 with removal efficiency from 74.73% to 99.09%.

according to adsorbent materials and type of heavy metals in this study.

Regarding contact time, all adsorbent materials showed high adsorption efficiency at a variable time from 0.15 to 2.38hrs for nickel ions and zinc ions but 5hrs for chromium ions.

Connecting of columns (sequential columns system) showed higher efficiency of heavy metals removal than the single column system.

Regarding filter cake system and mixed adsorbent system, it seems clearly that the mixed adsorbent system and the filter cake system had lower removal efficiency than the parallel sequential columns system.Additionaly, Single metal ions adsorption in aqueous solution, showed higher and better removal efficiency than the efficiency of removal in case of multi- metals system.

The efficiency of Single metal ions removal was from 91.5% to 99.7%.

4- FTIR spectrum illustrated that hydroxyl groups, -CH, -C-N, -C-O, N-H, =CO, -COOH and -OH were the major binding sites of heavy metals.

And Microscopic morphology examination by (SEM) and (CLMD) showed changes in characteristics of surface texture and morphology of the adsorbent material surfaces after adsorption process.

5-Finally, regeneration and reusing of plant waste adsorbents were found relatively high and varied clearly according to heavy metal removal but not so in all cases of a number of uses.

From foregoing, it seems clearly that the plant wastes that have been conducting the study on it, which were rice husk, date seeds and corn cobs have high efficiency in treatment of industrial waste water by removing the heavy metals and reducing of TDS, TSS, TH, E.C and COD levels according to the experimental design with treatment system technique, and considered safe, economical and nonpolluting environmentally .
