Mansoura University in Egypt has signed a contract with the University of Manchester in the UK in 2006 to implement undergraduate Manchester medical curriculum in Mansoura medical school.

The package included integrated problem based learning (PBL) techniques and methods of assessment.

Manchester is monitoring quality of the programme along with the Egyptian Ministry of higher education.

The main impact on medical education in Mansoura, Egypt can be summarized as teaching small PBL groups (10 students), minimal number of theoretical lectures, many clinical seminars and debate sessions, elective and student selected components in each semester and weekly student's presentations and assignments.

Objective methods of assessment are implemented throughout the programme namely, multiple choice questions (MCQ), extended matching questions (EMQ) and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCE).

No oral, long or short case exams are used either in preclinical or clinical years.

The lessons learned and the impact on the quality of medical education in Mansoura, Egypt based upon formal reports from the Egyptian Ministry of higher education and Manchester medical school will be highlighted in this report.
