The lost guide wire

A guide wire was lost during insertion of a femoral arterial line in a sick patient in the Intensive Care Unit.

This was successfully managed by surgical retrieval of the wire.

The principles of central vascular catheter insertion and the current interventions to deal with guide wire loss is discussed in this report.
