الملخص الإنجليزي

The purpose of this thesis is to map multi-temporal changes of vegetation in arid and semiarid areas of Mafraq, part of the Jordan Badia, from landsat TM and ETM+ images.

The specific objectives of the study are to assess the efficiency of different digital image processing in mapping vegetation changes, to assess and adopt also the most accurate method for mapping vegetation changes.

Vegetation maps were also produced using several algorithms available in the Software.

The temporal vegetation changes in the Jordanian Badia were extracted from the Landsat TM 1992 and ETM+ 2002 images using the methods: Visual Analyses, Image Difference (algebra), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and GIS Analyses.

Results showed that there were differences in mapping vegetation changes between the classes and within the class according to the used change detection method.

Generally mapping temporal vegetation changes by using these approaches gives good outputs.

Results of the digital processing for landsat imagery showed that the Visual Analysis or the On-Screen Digitizing as it is called also, shows better performance for mapping temporal vegetation changes in arid and semiarid areas, because it gives good information about the land cover changes either from or to.

From the results, there is another advantage of this method it gives information about the changes of the classes individually, so land cover change for each type of classes will be known.

The other two methods (NDVI difference and Band Subtraction) can be used for general studies of vegetation change detection without knowing the changes happened in each class (changed to other class).

The results from these two methods do not indicate an increase or decrease in vegetation areas, it only gives that there is a vegetation change in a region without giving a specific details.

XII Results of the study area showed that there was a significant decrease in the rainfed barley and irrigated vegetables areas, the changed area were mainly to nonvegetated and non-cultivated areas.

As a result there was an increase in the non vegetated/cultivated areas.

Results showed also an increasing in the irrigated olives and urbanized areas during study period
