In this work, composite materials were prepared from unsaturated polyester resin UPE with two types of fillers (sawdust and chopped reeds).

The present work aims to develop a new class of natural fillers based polymer composites with different types of wood and to analyse their mechanical behavior.

The molding method is used to prepare sheets of UPE / sawdust composite, UPE / chopped reeds composite and commercial wood blocks.

The mechanical properties studied include tensile strength, young’s modulus, flexural strength, and impact strength for all specimens at normal conditions (N.C).

The Commercial wood, UPE and its composite samples were immersed in water for about 30 days to find the weight gain (Mt%) of water for all the samples, also to find the effect of water on their flexural strength and Young's modulus.

The results show that the composite materials of reeds fillers quite better mechanical properties compared than others at (N.C) and after immersion in water.

The chopped reeds composite samples gain highest values of tensile strength (7.2 MPa) and Young's modulus (2.1 GPa) compared with sawdust composite samples (5.35 MPa, 1.7 GPa) and commercial wood samples (4.9 MPa, 1.8 GPa) at (N.C).

Also the results show that the UPE / chopped reeds composite samples gain highest values of flexural strength (24.5 MPa) compared with sawdust composite samples (21.5 MPa) and commercial wood samples (12MPa) at (N.C).

Also UPE / chopped reeds composite samples, on the other hand, gain highest values of Young's modulus (5.1 GPa) compared with sawdust composite samples (2.6 GPa) and commercial wood samples (1.4 GPa) at (N.C).

Finally the results showed that the commercial wood samples have relatively lowest values of the impact strength (0.625 KJ/m2) as compared with sawdust and reeds composites samples at (N.C), while the chopped reeds composites samples have highest values of the impact strength (5.541KJ/m2) at (N.C).

The results show that the commercial wood samples have relatively high values of weight gain (Mt%) of water (0.941 %) as compared with sawdust composite samples (0.043%) and chopped reeds composites samples (0.144%) after immersion.

They also show a decrease in the values of Young's modulus for all the samples after immersion in water so that the samples of chopped reeds composite gain (0.96 GPa), the Sawdust composite samples (0.19 GPa) and the commercial wood samples (0.28 GPa) after immersion.

Finally it shows a slight decrease in values of flexural strength for all the samples except for the composite material formed from UPE / chopped reeds which showed an increase in the value of flexural strength after immersion, where the wet samples of UPE / chopped reeds composite gain (29 MPa), the Sawdust composite samples (19 MPa) and commercial wood samples (3 MPa).
