The aim of this work is to determine the concentrations of radon, uranium and the background of gamma rays at the University of Baghdad – Al- Jadiriyah site using solid state nuclear track detectors (SSNTDs) and hand held gamma spectrometer (identiFINDER).

It is an important place where there is a high population of students up to 40 000 every day working in this place, so it was necessary to measure background radiation and concentrations of radon and uranium.

A 112 radon dosimeters were designed and distributed in the buildings of the colleges and institutes to determine the indoor radon concentrations.

The results of radon concentrations showed that they were varying from 22.399 ± 2.182 Bq/mP3P in a Studies Section in the Institute of Laser to 66.447 ± 1.980 Bq/mP3P in a Unit of Artistic and Sports Activity in the College of Education for Women with an average value of 45.487 ± 1.157 Bq/mP3P.

The average indoor radon concentrations were calculated in the colleges and institutes of the University of Baghdad – Al-Jadiriyah site whereas the lowest average value was 30.008 ± 1.46 Bq/mP3P which was found in the Institute of Genetic Engineering and the highest average value was 61.168 ± 1.48 Bq/mP3P which was found in the College of Khwarizmi Engineering.

Radon concentrations in soil were measured in different locations in Al-Jadiriyah site, where the average value was found to be 66.73 ± 2.62 Bq/mP3P.The specific activities of uranium in soil samples were varied from 17.145 ± 0.623 Bq/kg near the College of Khwarizmi Engineering to 21.496 ± 1.153 Bq/kg near the Library of the College of Engineering with an average value of 18.672 ± 0.457 Bq/kg.

Uranium concentrations in soil samples were varied from 1.383 ± 0.0503 ppm to 1.733 ± 0.093 ppm with an average value of 1.506 ± 0.037 ppm.

Radon Abstract II mass exhalation rates were ranged from 2.851±0.1874 mBq/kg.h to 4.240±0.3797 mBq/kg.h with an average value of 3.31±0.13 mBq/kg.h.

The average indoor inhalation exposure (radon) effective dose in the buildings was 0.8058±0.0205 mSv yP-1P.

Seventy five locations were measured to determine the background of gamma rays in Al- Jadiriyah site and it was found that the average value of about 0.0328±0.00047 μSv/h.
