أبو يعلى أحد محدثي الموصل الأعلام في القرن الثالث للهجرة/ التاسع للميلاد.

ولد أبو يعلى في الموصل ونشأ في بيئة علمية، وجّه عنايته في البداية إلى حفظ القرآن الكريم ودراسته باعتباره المصدر الأول للمعرفة الدينية في الإسلام.

ثم درَس الحديث والفقه، فضلاً عن ذلك فقد سعى إلى أخذ العلم من العلماء في المساجد وحلقات الدرس، وشدّ الرحال إلى العلماء في أقطار العالم الإسلامي.

The Traditinist Abu Yacla al-Mawwilli Dr.

Abdul- Satter Hamdoun Ahmad Aby Yacla (Ahmad ibn Ali ibn al-Muthana ibn Yahya ibn Aisa ibn Hilal attimimi al-Mawsilli) (d.

919 A.D./307 A.H.) is one to the outstanding 3rd century Traditionists in Mosul.

He was born in Mosul and was educated in it where he first dedicated his efforts to the study of the Holy Quran as the main fountain- head for religious knowledge in Islam.

Then he studied Traditions ab and Jurisprodence imbibing knowledge from scholars in mosques and learning circles as well as from travelling across Muslim world to get in touch with Muslim scholars there.

Abu Yacla devoted almost all his time in collecting Traditions from both local and international sources.

Among his authorities were Traditionists, jurisprudent references and narrators.

Besides his acquired knowledge & that he obtained from such luminaries as Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al- Mawsilli, Khalifa ibn al-Khayyat, Muhammad ibn Abdullah al- Mawsilli, Ahmad ibn Hatam al- Taweel, Yahya ibn Maeen, and Zakariya ibn Yahya al-Kisa’t, he expanded on some and commented on others.

Abu Yacla soon was well- known among the best Traditionists of his age.

He was generally regarded as the best Traditionist and the most accomplished authority on references so that students from all over the Muslim word commenced on attending his lectures so as to benefit from his comprehensive knowledge of Traditions and other related disciplines.

Among his students were Abu Adbul- Rahman an-Nisa’I, Abu Zakariya al- Azadi author of (The History of Mosul), Aby Hatam Habban, al- Tabarani, Muhammad an-Nisaburi and many others.

Among his personal attributes that were well-known among scholars of his age are honesty, intelligence, confidence, rationality, patience and good-manners as well as many other positive qualities that caused adh- Dhabbi to call him (The Traditionis of Mosul).

It is well-worth bearing in mind that Abu- Yacla’s qualifications went beyond teaching so as to include compilation in Traditions.

Among his works are: al-Masnad al- Kabir, al-Musnad al- Saghir, His Teachers Biographies, and al- Magharid.

Also, we have to mention that his Musnad al-Kabir was ibn al- Athir’s reference in the lather work “Usud al-Ghaba Fi Manifat as- Sahaba.
