الملخص الإنجليزي
Zubair Formation is the most important formation of the Lower Cretaceous depositional cycle in Iraq.
It is consists mainly of interbedded sandstone, shale, siltstone and sometimes thin beds of carbonate.Shale thickness increase towards east on the expense of sandstone.
In Iraq This Formation has five members but in Luhais oil field, Zubair Formation is divided into three members (lower, middle and upper).
Quartz is the main component of the sandstone in the Formation with minor percentage of feldspar and rare rock fragments.
Sand grain size ranges from very fine to medium, with roundness ranging from rounded to subangular.
Sandstone of Zubair Formation is chemically and physically mature.
Its rank is quartz arenite and quartz wake rank for few samples.
Most clastic grains are transported by alluvial processes from craton interior source area and deposited on a passive margin.
Heavy minerals detected in the sandstone of Zubair Furmation are zircon, rutile, epidote, chlorite, tourmaline, glaucophane, staurolite, biotite, muscovite and opaque minerals.
The ultrastable heavy minerals have the main ratio among heavy minerals.
X.R.D analyses show that Zubair Formation clay minerals content consists mainly of kaolinite, with few presence of illite, palygorskite and rarely illite -smectite mixed layer.
Many diagenetic processes affected Zubair Formation in different intensities. These processes are bioturbation, cementation, dissolution, dolomitization, recrystallization, replacement, alteration, authigenesis and compaction .These processes affected porosity in different ways some of which lead to forming new minerals.Minor amounts of carbonate rock were occurs along the Formation these carbonate belong to the following classes are mudstone, bio litho wakestone and dolomitic mudstone.
The major sedimentary facies recognized within the Zubair Formation are marshes, well drained swamp, distributary chanel, distributary mouth bar, subaerial levee, interdistributary bay, shelf and prodelta facies for that sedimentary environment of Zubair Formation is Delta environment
