الملخص الإنجليزي

The Avroman Formation is exposed in the Iraqi Zagros suture zone along the Iraqi-Iranian border.

Four exposed section were studied with maximum thickness of 680m.

These sections are the Hanay Din, Nawe, Kani Seif and Dizly sections.

All sections are mainly composed of limestone interbeded with recrystallized dolomitic limestone and brecciated limestone.

The Nawe section may serve to proposal as type locality of the Avroman Formation in Iraq.

Three units can be recognized within the studied succession, each unit has a specific characteristic feature (U1, U2, & U3).

These units are separated by marker beds of recrystallized dolomitic limestone and brecciated limestone.

The Avroman carbonates consist of limestone with exception of two samples which are dolomitic limestone (8CN), while the second one is Brecciated limestone (38N).

Insoluble residue consists mainly of clay minerals (Smectite, mixed layer, Illite, and Kaolinite) and detrital minerals (Quartz and Foresterite).

Geochemical study shows that (CaO) is the main major oxide (34-56 wt%), and the Avroman carbonate rocks can be divided into three different groups according to its mineral composition.

Five main types of microfacies have been recognized, these include Mudstone, Mudstone-Wackestone, Wackestone, Wackestone-Packstone and Packstone microfacies.

The Avroman Formation was deposited on a shallow carbonate platform, most probably on a homoclinal ramp setting were gradual transition of shallow marine to deep marine conditions.

The Avroman succession can be divided in to a number of third order cycles, these cycles are mainly asymmetrical.
