Comparative study of psychiatric disorders and symptoms in patients seeking aesthetic versus functional septoplasty

Background : Rapidly increasing number of cosmetic surgery in our society and lack of researches on this subject, persuaded us to study the psychiatric disorders and symptoms in a group of rhinoptaxtic candi- dates and compare them with patients undergoing septoplasty. Method : One hundred and twenty persons in rhinoplasty group were compared with 119 eases in septoplasty group.

Basic variables were matched in two groups.

Standardized SCL-90K questionnaire was used for interview tug and screening each case.

Psychiatric diagnosis was made on the basis of DSM-IV.

Student's t-test was used for statis-tical analysts and P < 0.05 was considered for significant. Result : The two groups were matched according to their age and sex.

In rhinoplasty group 9- eases (7.5%) had psychiatric disorders among which one person was suffering from Body Dysmorphic Disor-der (BDD), one east: from anxiety disorder and sewn eases from per-sonality disorders, none of the septoplasty cases had any psychiatric disorder.

Psychological analysis of the rhinoplasty cases revealed 13 (10.83%) cases of paranoid dimension with the score above cutoff point, achieving the menu score 6.29 ± 4.2, while in septoplasty group only 4 persons (3.36%) reached this dimension with 5.66-3.5 scores.

The difference was statistically insignificant.

Anxiety level was found in 3 (2.5%) cases of rhinoplasty with the .scores above cutoff point (5.09 ± 4.5) while in septoplasty group 2 persons were found (1.6%) with mean score 6.07 ± 5.02 (p = 0.01). Conclusion : We concluded that psychiatric disorders are more common in rhinoplasty cases in comparison to septoplasty consider-able number of rhinoplasty eases achieved paranoid level scores above cut off point.
