الملخص الإنجليزي

Safety in the construction industry has always been a major issue.

Wherever reliable records are available, construction is found to be one of the most dangerous on safety and health criteria, particularly in developing countries.

Palestine is a developing country with a construction industry suffers from a poor safety conditions.

This thesis is broadly concerned with national culture and its influence on safety climate in the construction industry in the Gaza strip.

More specifically, it investigates the safety perceptions, attitudes, and behavior of Palestinian construction workers, engineers and managers.

It presents the empirical results of a number of 250 questionnaire surveys administrated in Palestine targeting construction workers and engineers with an interview to 10 construction managers with safety management responsibilities.

Quantitative data analysis methods, including reliability test, Pearson correlation, Spearman test, Cornbach's Alpha test, and Kolomgorov-Simirnov test were applied by SPSS package.

Based upon the survey analysis results, this study demonstrates that the majority of Palestinian construction workers and engineers have a good degree of risk awareness and self-rated competence.

Further it was found, empirically, that overall workers’ and engineers’ intentional behavior seems to be best explained by their attitudes towards their own and managements’ safety responsibilities, as well as their perception of the risk they are generally exposed to in their workplace environment.

The study also showed that workers and engineers respondents are more collective, feminist, believe in less power distance and opt for higher uncertainty avoidance in their attitudes.

The analysis of the relationship between workers’ behavior and national culture revealed that more workers working in a collective, feminist, and higher uncertainty avoidance environments, that more they are going to exhibit safer behavior.

Finally, this research showed that the construction workers, engineers and managers have a good perception of safety nature, but the safety must be effectively imposed and that can be happen through a several recommendations were made at the end of this research like updating the local rules and laws with applying the penalties with who violate those rules, and also make a several workshops and meetings with the several construction parties to spread the concept of the safety wider.
