Monitoring of aflatoxin m1 in milk and some milk- products

Two hundred samples of Raw, Long life,Powder and Condensed milk (50 each) and 60 samples of Kareish, Damietta, processed and Hard cheese (15 each) were collected from dairy farms, milk and milk product factories and shops present at Giza and Kaluobia provinces.

Fifty ml or g of milk or cheese samples respectively were analyzed for the presence of aflatoxin M1(AFM1) using ELISA.

For raw cows milk, 47 (94 %), long life 48 (96 %), powder 29 (58 %) and condensed 22 ( 44 %) were positive for the AFM1.

2% each of raw and long life milk samples were higher than the permissible limits.

Non of kareish cheese had AFM1 while 11(73.3%) of Damietta, 5(33.3%) of processed and 8 (53.3%) of hard cheese were positive for AFM1.

Except one sample (6.6 %) of processed and hard cheese, all the other contaminated samples of cheese in the current study were below the action level of the permissible limit (250 ppt) as laid down by the (FDA,1984).
