Geographical Indications are shared intellectual property rights, recognizing a product’s link to a particular geographical area.

The superior qualities that characterize these products are tightly linked to their place of origin.

Developing countries possess a competitive advantage in the sectors related to GIs.

If properly implemented, they might be able to unlock significant value from consumers’ attractiveness towards these products.

The case study of “Clementine de Berkane” is used to evaluate the potential impacts of GIs as a tool for local development, as well as the conditions necessary to fulfill it.

The findings indicate that GIs have a favorable impact in the local development.

It also concludes that it is essential to have a satisfactory surrounding framework in order for the benefits stemming from GI production to benefit the rightful producers and regions.
