الملخص EN

Lipid peroxidation (LPO) plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis with increased risk of coronary heart disease.

The relationship between serum lipids, LPO, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances [TBARS] and anti-oxidant enzyme-glutathione-S-transferase alpha [GST-?] was investigated in 15 non-diabetic male patients with coronary heart disease (CHD) and 15 healthy male subjects as a control group.

Serum cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol were significantly higher, whereas HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower, in patients compared to control individuals.

Plasma levels of TBARS and serum level of GST-? were significantly higher in patients than in control subjects (p < 0.05 for both) but there was no correlation between common carotid intima media thickness and both TBARS and GST-?.

These observations confirm the role of LPO in the pathogenesis of CHD, and this is associated with a compensatory increase in the activity of the antioxidant enzyme GST-a.
