Identifying pro-poor growth episodes in Algeria : an empirical study

This paper aimed to show whether economic growth in Algeria was pro-poor or not (i.e.

anti-poor).

We used an inductive method based on the relative approach of propoorness by drawing the poverty growth curve (PGC) in terms of historical distribution surveys of selected Arab economies.

The findings confirm that economic growth was pro-poor in Algeria during the period 1995-2005 although we show that growth selected economies other than Algeria benefited the poor by a trickle-down effect.

However, the study indicates that in general growth didn’t exacerbate poverty in most selected Arab countries; at the same time more attention should be given to inequality in order to alleviate poverty in the Arab world.
