Digital video contents have emerged lately resulting on a higher need for more sophisticated video content processing systems.

These systems would be used to efficiently process, describe, browse, and retrieve video data based on users’ requirements.

In this spirit, designing and developing a smart video processing system would be of great value to multimedia applications that provide video related services to end-users.

These services involve video abstraction and retrieval, two fields that have attracted worldwide intensive research efforts and received significant attention over the last few years mostly at the theoretical level not at the concrete one in terms of real systems developed.

This report provides an overview of some of the approaches, techniques, and algorithms cited in the literature and used to perform the video analytics capabilities supported by existing video processing systems that offer services built on top of digital video contents.

In fact, an optimized process model for video content abstraction is presented and a framework for video abstraction and retrieval based on this model is developed under the name of “A Smart Video Abstraction Framework”.

This system is a real-time video monitoring, event detection, notification delivery, and video related content retrieval solution that could be used in multiple promising multimedia applications in order to meet the users’ expectations and reach their highest satisfaction level.
