The research on readability assessment has been active since the 1920s leading to the creation of many readability formulas and more recently readability tools that are able to assess the level of difficulty of a certain piece of writing with respect to a specific scale.

Numerous languages have benefitted from the work on this area (English, French, Spanish, etc.).

Arabic on the other hand has not been thoroughly researched expect for few studies in the past few years.

Therefore, this thesis focuses on investigating the possible text characteristics that control the assignment of a text to a certain skill stage in Arabic.

Knowing these text features and how they evolve over skill levels of increasing difficulty would allow the evaluation of a reading material in order to assign it to the right audience of learners.

The purpose is to ensure a pleasant learning experience by providing the student with the appropriate reading materials.

This investigation is achieved through the study of texts from a well-known Arabic textbook to extract the significant text features.

These latter are then used to evaluate new texts to identify where they fall in the curriculum.

The proposed text features have been validated through a submission of the labeled texts to Arabic instructors who were able to confirm that the texts are appropriate to their respective skill stages.
