الملخص الإنجليزي

State of Kuwait is one of the leading countries in the sewer system that face water supply challenges among continued population growth and increase water demand.

It depends on the expensive desalination technique of seawater to satisfy almost all of its water demands while it has new alternatives of water supply such as wastewater reuse for all purposes.

The technology exists that enables wastewater to be treated to different levels of purity but treated sewage effluent (TSE) distribution not tailored to match the intended wastewater reuse applications.

TSE produced from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP’s) in Kuwait is of two main types; “Tertiary” and “RO” treated effluents.

This study aims to evaluates the wastewater reuse applications in Kuwait and examine the wastewater treatment technologies currently in use and analyze the data obtained from survey distributed to farmers for knowing TSE quality, quantity and distribution in years from 2005 to 2014.

Study evaluates the management of wastewater reuse to make the most appropriate use of the resources available.

Wastewater reuse was performed through gathering TSE distribution in years from 2005 to 2014 and actual cost and selling price of “Tertiary” and “RO” treated effluents and descriptive analytical method.

In order to TSE distribution, data collected from the records of WWTP’s and DMC which indicated that about 60% of “RO” treated effluents used for agriculture and the rest discharged to the sea while 20% of “Tertiary” treated effluent which actually maintains satisfactory levels of nutrients required for plant production used only for landscape irrigation and the rest discharged to the sea.

In order to survey TSE quality and quantity and collect the necessary data, a carefully designed questionnaire was prepared.

The questionnaire involved seven sections were related to; mechanism of water arrival, the quantity & quality of TSE preferred to use in agriculture and pros & cons of used TSE in agriculture.

The study community was Sulaibiya, Abdali and Wafra farmers.

The size of sample was 345 farms which recovery sufficed the purpose of analysis and study.

Results of statistical analysis indicated that the quantity of “RO” treated effluent is less than the quantity of water they use so, they depended largely on fresh water through tankers.

The farmers prefer “Tertiary” treated effluent than “RO” to avoid mix some fertilizer or materials with water.

The study recommended that mandatory action should be taken to implement the full utilization of TSE as “Tertiary” treated effluent for agriculture and “RO” treated effluent for other suitable purposes (groundwater recharge, industry…etc.), or the discharged TSE to the sea will be continuous causing more waste of cost state resources.
