الملخص الإنجليزي

This study compares subject ellipsis in both Arabic and English.

It attempts to prove that ellipsis is a principled process that is well organized by a set of rules and is a subject to specific constraints in both languages.

Arabic and English have many differences related to their syntax and semantics.

Nevertheless, the study suggests that they have some features in common when it comes to subject ellipsis.

The methodology followed in this study is a descriptive one there are examples include subject ellipsis to compare them.

To achieve the objectives of this study it is divided into four chapters.

The first chapter is an introduction to the topic including the main concepts and definitions of ellipsis in general and subject ellipsis in specific.

Moreover, it introduces the aims of the significance of the study and the statement of the problem.

The second chapter is the reviews the literature of subject ellipsis in English as well as in Arabic.

Chapter three handles data and discussion.

In this chapter the data of both Arabic and English languages are presented and discussed thoroughly.

Then it sheds light on similarities and differences between both languages.

Chapter four is the conclusion in which a summary of the results of the work are presented.

The study reveals that ellipsis is a syntactic process in both languages.

Arabic and English subject ellipsis have shown a degree of differences with respect to the condition, the sites, the types and the linguistic and nonlinguistic indicators that indicate ellipsis.

It also shows that there exists some parametric variations attributed in most cases to the syntactic differences between the two languages.
