الملخص الإنجليزي

The purpose of this study is to investigate how Arabic learners of english and native speakers of English interpret English structurally ambiguous sentences.

Thirty subjects participated in this study divided into two groups; fifteen Arab learners of English and fifteen native speakers of English .All were secondary students in RetalInternational Academy in Amman.

The subjects were given a test of seventeen ambiguous sentences related to seven structural categories contain prepositional phrases, relative clauses, adverbial clause ,negative sentences , sentences with nonfinite clause, sentences with adjectives and sentences with ellipses.

The English –native speakers subjects were asked to paraphrase the sentences and the Arab learners of English subjects were asked to translate the same sentences into Arabic .It has been recognized that being a native speaker of English plays an effective role in interpreting ambiguous sentences which makes the majority of native subjects introduced two interpretations for most of the sentences .On the other hand, the majority of Arab learners introduced only one interpretation .

It has been recognized that Arab learners of English face difficulty in interpreting ambiguous structure and generally take the surface meaning which can be understood from the sequence of words.
