Crude protein, amino acid and mineral contents in grains of ten pigmented sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.)‎ lines

Ten pigmented sorghum lines (LKhs 1, Lkhs 3, LKhs 5, LKhs 8, LKhs 10, LC-9, LC-13, L47, LIND and LDeib) were screened for their crude protein, amino acid and mineral contents.

Total amino acids varied from 2.78 to 7.31 g/100g, the crude protein ranged from 9.2 to 14.1% and seven elements (K, Ca, Fe, Zn, Cr, Cu and Ni) were detected.

Grains of line LKhs 10 had a significant high amount of protein (14.1%), lysine (70 mg/100g), methionine (80 mg/100 g) and threonine (190 mg/100 g).

As these amino acids are limiting amino acids that affect cereal protein quality; this line can be used in breeding programmes for enhancing protein quality in sorghum.

Line LIND showed high concentrations of K (2110 mg/100 g), Ca (946 mg/100 g) and Fe (22.7 mg/100 g); therefore, it could be used as a good source of these elements.
