Use of Adelaide technique to determine available browse in Al-Ain forest reserve, North Kordufan State, Sudan

The study was conducted at Al-Ain forest reserve in North Kordufan State.

The available browse was determined by Adelaide technique through step-wise regression in the form of Y = a+bx1+cx2, where x1 and x2 are the width and height, respectively, using estimated weight, of the selected shrubs not exceeding 2 meters in height.

Results showed that the co-efficient of determination (R2) of these regressions were 0.802, 0.555, 0.350, 0.670 and 0.460, for the shrubs Mukhait, Talih, Gudeim, Sidir and Kitir, and the available browse was found to be 531.733, 138.267, 102.400, 230.400 and 65.400 g, respectively.

On the other hand, when the calculated weight was used, R2 for the same shrubs and the same order as above were 0.802, 0.555, 0.142, 0.871 and 0.462 and the available browse of shrubs were 90.882, 31.313, 84.000, 52.272 and 28.430 g.

The Adelaide technique in its simple application was found to be reliable, satisfactory, non-destructive and not time consuming
