Comparative study between videoendoscopic multiple rubber band ligation and multiple rubber band ligation using barron's technique in treatment of haemorrhoids

Background : Elastic band ligation using rigid proctoscope is the treatment of choice in patients with bleeding internal haemorrhoids, this rigid instrument has limited flexability,narrower field of view, in addition it has less diagnostic value.

Therefore, this study was conducted to compare results of the traditional rubber band ligation and video endoscopic band ligation.

Aim of the work : To compare the results of simple session rubber band ligation using video endoscopic haemorrhoidal ligation (VEHL) versus band ligation using Barron's(BBL) ligation, in symptomatic grade I to III haemorrhoids.

Patients and methods : Fifty patients referred to the Department of Surgery, Medical Research Institute, Alexandria University were randomly divided into two groups, each contained 25 patients with internal haemorrhoids grade I to II, using (VEHL) of the three sites and (BBL) technique.

Results : As regards bleeding, pain and prolapse, there were no statistical significance between the two groups (p>0.05) in the follow up period within 24 hrs of the ligation, two weeks and three months after ligation, four cases needed relegation, while the prolapse completely disappeared.

Conclusions : VEHL would be the choice as it provides feasible multiple ligation, as well as its diagnostic role in visualization of the operative field and the whole colon if needed.
