الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aimed at investigating the “Language Situation among the Palestinian Arabs of Israel”.Particularly, it aimed at answering the following questions: 1- How proficient are the Palestinian Arabs of Israel in both Arabic and Hebrew? 2- In what domains of language do the Palestinian Arabs of Israel use Arabic and Hebrew? 3- What are their attitudes toward Arabic and Hebrew? 4- What factors are involved in using both Arabic and Hebrew among the Palestinian Arabs of Israel? To achieve the goal of this study, the researcher selected a sample that comprised 70 Palestenian Arabs of Israel.

The researcher also designed a sociolinguistic questionnaire that consisted of five sections, i.e., a demographic background, language proficiency, language use, language attitudes and the factors that support using both Arabic and Hebrew.

The results of the study revealed that the second generation of the Palestinian Arabs of Israel are proficient in both languages ,i.e., Arabic and Hebrew.

Moreover, they use both languages in their daily life: Arabic is used at home, mosque, neighborhood, school, media, and in their inner speech, while Hebrew is used at work and for business transactions.

Furthermore, they have positive attitudes toward both languages.

On the other hand, the study also pointed out some factors that support the use of Arabic and Hebrew.

These factors were: habitual language use of Arabic in a variety of situations and locations, positive attitudes toward both languages; different social, cultural, psychological and political variables such as the internal marriages; the social segregation; the tightly- knit community, and the existence of different institutions that support the use of Arabic.

As for Hebrew, the most important factor was the socioeconomic status of Hebrew as the language that guarantees economic as well as educational rewards.
