Association of hepatitis C virus with type 2 diabetes mellitus

Several studies from different parts of the world have found that 13 % to 33 % of patients with chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) have associated diabetes mellitus mostly type 2.

Therefore, it is important to identify the magnitude of the problem of diabetes in order to optimize the treatment of chronic hepatitis C.

The study was aimed to investigate the frequency and predictors of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients infected with hepatitis C virus.

A case control study conducted at academic teaching hospitals of Basrah province during a period of 45 months from January 2011 to September 2014 .A total of 125 cases were selected from HCV seropositive patients who were older than 18 years, diabetics or non-diabetics, and 130 apparently healthy controls were included in this study.

Sociodemographic and risk factors data were collected by questionnaire.

Out of 125 HCV seropositive cases, 39(31.2%) were diabetics.

Out of 130 controls, 20(15.4%) were diabetics.

On multivariate analysis, HCV seropositive patients have high risk of developing diabetes as compared with seronegatives (OR=3.01, 95%CI: 1.41, 6.41).

In conclusion, advancing age, increased weight, residence in urban regions and family history of DM are independent predictors of type 2 diabetes mellitus in HCV seropositive patients
