Weed survey on irrigated garlic (A Llium Sativum L.)‎ in Dongla Area Northern State, Sudan

The weed survey was carried out at six hamlets in Dongola area namely: Eldoum Elawazma, El Selaim Basin, Elatroona, Irtidi, Elmasakeen and Kawa during the winter season of 2010 to determine the most common and prevalent weed species associated with garlic (Allium sativum L.) cultivation.

A stratified random sampling procedure was adopted, whereby each hamlet was divided into fields of which 10 were randomly selected.

Number of individual weed species was determined in 10 quadrates each 1 m2.

The field density, field frequency, field uniformity, relative field density, relative field frequency, relative field uniformity and relative abundance of the species were determined.

Data revealed the presence of 32 species of annual and perennial weeds plants belonging to 15 families.

The highest number of species occurred in Elatroona whilst the lowest was recorded in Eldoum Elawazma.

Cyperus rotundus, Cynodon dactylon, Chenopodium album, Sinapis arvensis, Chenopodium murale, Sorghum arundinaceum and Echinochloa colona recorded high relative abundance.

Species with moderate relative abundance included Convolvolus arvensis, Malva palviflora and Trigonella hamosa.

The other species exhibited low to very low relative abundance and most of them occurred in 1 -2 hamlets.
