الملخص الإنجليزي

This research investigated the risks associated with deep excavations in addition to identifying methods used to manage the wastes and other disposal materials resulted from those excavations for large-scale projects in Jordan.

Numerous risks are associated with deep excavations especially those for areas with close proximity, including affecting the overall stability for the project site, adjacent existing structures, utilities, and other infrastructure.

The practical part of this research included conducting different activities.

The first of these is reviewing for previous reports concerning site investigations for residential buildings, and conducting site visits to other projects.

The second activity was the design of the survey questionnaire that was distributed afterwards to group of expert's engineers, designers and consultant companies.

The third activity was related to analysing the collected data (using SPSS) for the purpose of quality evaluations.

And finally, the forth activity was developing guidelines and recommendations.

Based on the results of the survey questionnaire analysis, it was concluded that engineering management of deep excavations and their wastes are inadequate in Jordan and characterized by several deficiencies such as lack of commitment form the projects' managers to conduct accurate site explorations for projects (in general) and especially for those requiring deep excavations, indetermination for the optimum location of the output of excavations (wastes) especially for those to be used as backfill materials and etc According to the research conclusions, it was recommended construction companies should accurately comply with requirements of public administration in the implementation of the deep excavations, and should perform the required site investigation studies according to actual site and laboratory data (i.e., not based on the experience).
