It is common knowledge that terminology is very important in linguistic studies as it pays the ground for understanding the concepts that the terms represent.

One important term in pragmatics is 'intentionality' which stands for looking into the content of a discourse and the intention of the speaker.

Understanding intentionality facilitates the understading of the speaker's intended meaning and the success of communication.

This study is an attempt at exploring the elememts of intentionality in the work of the famous Arab scholar, Al-Jahidh, who contributed a lot to different fields of knowledge.

Al-Jahidh's letters were chosen as representative examples of the talent of this scholar and as the data for the analysesconducted here.
