Database applications are being used in numerous domains in our lives, and their existence has become important to facilitate the modern lifestyle in all its aspects.

This importance has added to the focus on protecting the stored data that is becoming increasingly vulnerable, especially in the case of sensitive and critical databases holding banking accounts, credit card confidential information, governmental files of people, etc.

This context has created a growing need for added security in database applications, where encryption has proven to be a viable and efficient approach to protect data in databases.

However, as in any case where information security is addressed, performance is directly affected.

Actually, the cost (deterioration of performance) of encrypting and decrypting data being inserted or retrieved from the database adds to the regular cost of storing and retrieving data from an unencrypted database.

In this thesis, a new database encryption approach is presented.

The proposed approach builds on an existing approach that secures a database by encrypting selected columns that contains sensitive data by adding one additional table per selected column to hold the unencrypted data.

The proposed approach suggested the use of new table structure for encrypted data that is based on selected data encryption.

The proposed approach adds to the security of the database by encrypting several columns efficiently.

This resulted in reducing the time associated with query operations as a result of the new table structure and reduction in the complexity of SQL sentences.

In addition to performance improvement, the storage space used for the encryption process is reduced compared to other approaches, and at the same time maintain the level of security.

An evaluation has been conducted of the existing approaches along with the proposed approach to secure database applications via encryption.

The approach has been implemented and tested using ten experiments.

The experiments showed performance improvement in various database operations without losing the balance with the database security.

The proposed approached showed performance improvement in the range of 5% up to 99% for multiple selected columns for encryption in the different database operations compared to previous approaches.

The improvement in performance depends on the problem size and database operation type.
