الملخص الإنجليزي

The political events during the English Renaissance period made England a fertile field for political studies of the great dramatic and poetic texts.

Shakespearean dramatic texts are among the best that clearly reflected the political events of their times.

Accordingly, this study offers a critical analysis of the issue of kingship in three tragedies by William Shakespeare: Hamlet, King Lear and Macbeth.

A great deal of critical works have been produced on the issue of kingship from different angles.

This thesis tries to make use of the most relevant and recent of these critical works.

It is divided into four chapters and a conclusion.

The first chapter consists of an introduction to the study of the issue of kingship as one of the main topics in these tragedies.

In the second, third and fourth chapters respectively, the issue of kingship as portrayed in the three tragedies will be critically discussed.

The studied plays present several different points relevant to the issue of kingship such as: the king as God's choice and representative on earth, the difference between tyranny and honorable kingship, the brutal crime of regicide, the ambition to seize kingship, the brutal struggle for monarchy, the chaos and destruction that result from the struggle over the throne and other relevant conflicts.

Thus, Shakespeare's artistic interest in the political events of his time will naturally be discussed.

Finally, the conclusion puts forward the findings and results of the discussions in the previous chapters.

The method used throughout the work can be described as textual and critical relying on the plays as primary sources and other secondary sources casting additional light on the topic of the work
