This study investigates the phenomenon of the open-source computer programs in the Arab world, together with the accompanying legal and economic problems at the levels of innovation, development, distribution, and usage.

In this framework, the study has shed light on the legal aspects of this phenomenon, and the extent of its compatibility or incompatibility with the legal systems designed to protect intellectual property (the Author's Rights, Patent, and Undisclosed Information Law).

The study has concluded that this phenomenon is worthy of adoption and encouragement in view of its many benefits.

These benefits include the encouragement of innovation in the area of information technology, the dissemination of knowledge, and the containment of the monopoly exercised by the more prominent companies operating in this field.
