الملخص EN

Radioactive wastes are generated in Egypt by virtually all activities, which utilize radioactive material as part of their operational process.

The increasing production and utilization of radioactive isotopes within a country without nuclear power must be accompanied with corresponding development of a waste management system.

At the very beginning of waste management planning, a number of actions must be taken to bring the waste into a form that complies with specifications or acceptance for subsequent management steps.

An overall waste management scheme generally includes several or all of the following steps; segregation, treatment, conditioning, storage, transport and disposal.

There are a variety of alternatives for each step in waste management including safe waste disposal e.g.

ranging from disposal to landfills and to deep geological disposal.

All different steps have to be evaluated, because all steps are dependent on each other.

This dependent is one of the reasons why QA/QC is necessary to be included in all different steps.

One of the main concerns for transporting the waste from all governorates within Egyptian territories is the waste packages which ensure the safety and security of transported waste/disused sealed sources even during any abnormal events and it is a mandatory for Egyptian Regulatory Authority to establish basis and requirements for waste packages for all steps of radioactive waste management such as transportation, conditioning, storage and disposal
