Financing house purchase in the west : buying a house in Australia

السؤال

I am a Muslim Alhamdu Li Allah, living in Australia. I have asked a few Muslim sheiks here in my area in regards to borrowing money from the bank for my first house. There seems to be great debate as to whether this is permissible or not in Islam. Recently, a fatwa was issued, stating something on the lines that people in foreign countries with no Islamic law are permitted to purchase their first house with interest. So is this the case or not. Please confirm for me this situation.
