الملخص الإنجليزي

The present thesis aims at exploring the devices of cohesion with special emphasis on substitution and ellipsis.

It also provides a theoretical and practical analysis and exploration of substitution and ellipsis in Earnest Hemingway’s novel The Old Man and the Sea.The study is divided into an introduction, two chapters and a conclusion.

The introduction includes an overview, the questions of the study, and the methodology adopted.

In chapter two, the five types of cohesive devices are discussed: reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion are discussed briefly.

Yet, substitution and ellipsis, which are the main concern of this thesis, will be fully analyzed.

The third chapter is a practical analysis of substitution and ellipsis in Hemingway’s novella where many excerpts are drawn from the text and analyzed.

The conclusion contains the main findings of the study and illustrates how the two types of cohesive devices are used by the author to build up a coherent text.

It also answers some questions about substitution and ellipsis.
