الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims to investigate how Arab learners of English interpret English ambiguous sentences with ellipted elements.

It has been recognized that our students (non-native speakers of English) face difficulty with English ambiguous sentences in Sixty sophomore students from the English Department at Mu'tah University in Jordan participated in this study.

The participants were given a test of twenty English ambiguous sentences with ellipted elements.

The participants (non-native speakers of English) were asked to translate the sentences into Arabic by giving any possible meanings or interpretations.

It turns out that the majority of the subjects managed to provide only one interpretation.

That is, the participants face difficulty in interpreting English ambiguous structures and generally take the surface meaning which can be understood from the sequence of words.
