الملخص الإنجليزي

Constructing a dam within AL- Karak Wadi would be an important solution to controlling flood events, as well as increasing surface water budget and creating ground water recharge spots.

The realization of this endeavor is mainly based on locating the suitable site for dam construction in the area.

This research is a clear demonstration for the employment of remote sensing and geographic information techniques in dam site selection.

Digital Elevation Model (ASTER DEM 30m) was used from the Advanced Space Borne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer to characterize the catchment area.

Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus images (ETM+) from Landsat 8 were used to classify the land cover in the study area.

Several software packages such as (Envi4.2),(pivot table in Microsoft Excel), (ArcGIS 10.3) and (Global Mapper 16) were employed to construct and process the basic database.

In addition, ArcHydro extension from (ArcGIS 10.3) was employed to construct a simplified hydro model and analyze the runoff and flood data.

The parameters needed to site a dam included the following criteria: Wadi slope (less 4%), a stream order of 5 or more and a suitable runoff coefficient for the catchment.

Moreover a distance not less than 2000 m from a fault line and 300 m from roads and 1500 m from built-up areas.

Geospatial analysis was implemented to identify the proper location for siting dams over the catchment area.

Several locations were identified and the optimum location found to be close to the outlet of the main Wadi.

Sensitivity analysis was performed to estimate the water stored behind the dam given for different dam heights.

Using pivot table and geospatial tools, statistical analysis has been used to infer all needed information of the basin condition and figure out its own general condition.

GIS and RS are efficient tools to decide proper locations for dams draining towards the Jordan rift valley and the Dead Sea.
