National perspective and strategic interventions for the impact of desertification on gender immigration from western states of Sudan

The agriculture and the traditional unimproved grazing are the main professions undertaking by the majority of the population spreading over the rural areas.

In this, it constitutes the prime sources of the living and income revenues in the Sudan.

The onset of the drought and desertification has, recently, adversely affected rural population and animal wealth as well as land resources particularly in western Sudan.

This situation has induced ecological and socio- economic imbalance and, in parallel, hastened immigration and displacement to Khartoum state that has distinguished provisions and requirements that are incompatible with the socio- economic conditions of the displaced persons.

The paper aimed at representing background information about the internal displacement In the Sudan, its concept, dimensions and causes; the incidence and causes of drought and desertification; as well as the prevailing climatic conditions as well as socio- economic activities undertaking by the displaced persons and the negative impact created after they moved to urban areas with emphasis on gender females being the motivators of economic activities.

Also, attempts and efforts to resolve the problem highlighted.

The paper concluded that drought and desertification have deteriorated the rural physical and structural setup, particularly the economic aspect, in loss of land, decline productivity and income, as well as upsetting the social domain due to loss of shelter and disintegration of social fabric that retarded the working potentials of gender women.

The indicators so far envisaged necessitate adoption of some pragmatic measures that will improve and rehabilitate the displaced communities through setting up appropriate plans and implementing target oriented programmes so that the displaced persons will be in positions to regain their inherent potential capabilities and prepare for voluntary return back that will eventually ensure security and socio- economic settlement.
