الملخص الإنجليزي

Jordan has a long history of welcoming immigrants, especially those from war-torn countries.

Such immigrants have gone on to become important stakeholders in the Jordanian business world.

This exploratory research aims to build a profile of immigrant entrepreneurs in Jordan by first determining if they were opportunity- or necessity-driven entrepreneurs, and then seeing how that as well as challenges affected their adjustment to running businesses in their new homeland.

Previous experience running a business was tested as a moderating variable in this relationship.

A questionnaire was administered to a sample of 236 entrepreneurs of Syrian, Iraqi, and Libyan origin.

The majority were males holding a bachelor’s degree, mostly in engineering or business.

Most respondents started their businesses with start-up capital personally accrued by working in wholesale (import and export) or restaurant industries.

Also, t-test, one-way ANOVA Pearson correlation coefficient and moderated regression were applied to analyse collected data.

The findings showed that having a family background in business and entrepreneurial training significantly affected immigrant entrepreneurs’ adjustment to running enterprises in Jordan.

Moreover, immigrants are considered opportunity entrepreneurs rather than necessity entrepreneurs since they are highly pulled toward entrepreneurship.

In addition, the moderated regression results revealed that previous experience had no effect on the relationship between motivation and challenges in terms of adjusting to running an immigrant enterprise.
