Background& Objective: Myelomeningoceles are very common anamoly in our country.

Mostly it ends with permanent damage and handicap.

Lot of these children die due to meningitis as a complication.

It still till now a large number of children with myelo meningoceles seek medical care in pediatric hospital and other health centers.

So, we must know the reasons and the predisposing factors for the myelomeningoceles to reduce their incidence.

Materials & Methods: this study was made in the pediatric hospital in Damascus.

There were (320) case between the years (2005-2007) which mostly doing surgery in the age of neuborn and which they came from the different provineces provineces of Syria.

The patients were studied retrospectively by reviening their files and surgery reports.

Results: It's a very common anomaly in Syria, females more affected than the males, the most cases were from perifri of Damascus.

The first pregnancy has the highest incidence, there wasn't a direct kinship in most of half of cases.

The majority of cases had paraplegia, surgery was done in the first month of life.

Meningitis was the most complication in 74.3% of cases, and death occur in 20% of cases.

Conclusion: It's too important for the pregnant woman and even before a month of pregnancy, to take the Folic acid in dose 4-5 mg/d womans which have risk factors (+ Family history, taking antiepileptic pills) must observed during pregnancy.

In order to reduce the incidence of meningitis and death it's very important to do surgery as early as possible
