الملخص الإنجليزي

The behavior of vertical piles subjected to inclined loads is studied.

The piles are treated as beams embedded into elastic media and they are analyzed using the (p-y)-curve method.

A software, adopting the finite difference method to solve the differential equation, is utilized.

It is verified against field load-test measurements and its efficiency is assessed.

Also, a real application problem of an on-shore container yard in Um Qaser Port-Basra Province is solved.

In order to investigate the true behavior and supply the civil engineer with useful design charts, an extensive parametric study regarding pile configurations (pile type; penetration ratio; head fixity condition; load inclination angle) and soil characteristics (soil type; shear strength) is performed.

It is found that, the allowable pile capacity varies proportionally with the soil shear strength and it is inversely proportional to the load inclination angle (with vertical).

The rate of change vanishes as the load inclination angle exceeds (45o).

For bored piles, it is proportional to the penetration ratio.

Beyond a penetration ratio of (10), no considerable increase is achieved, and the piles behave as long piles.

For the studied practical range of penetration ratios regarding driven piles, the allowable capacity is almost constant, and the behavior resembles that of long piles.

For a specified penetration ratio, the maximum bending moment increases with soil shear strength increase.

This increase is slight for driven piles into cohesive material.

It is insensitive to the variation of the load inclination angle.

For bored piles, it is proportional to the penetration ratio, especially at low cohesion values.

Beyond a penetration ratio of (10), no considerable increase is detected.

For the studied practical range of penetration ratios regarding driven piles, the maximum bending moment is almost constant especially at low cohesion values but, a slight increase with penetration ratio, is recorded in dense sand.

For free-head piles, the depth of point of maximum bending moment reduces as soil strength increases, whereas it is located at the fixity point for fixed-head piles regardless of soil strength.

The results revealed a great influence of the pile-head fixity conditions.

The pile capacities and the absolute values of the maximum bending moments for fixed head conditions are greater than their counterparts for free head conditions.

The lateral capacity and the maximum bending moment for a pile driven into a cohesionless soil are increased if the pile is pushed towards an upward sloping ground and vice versa.
