Background and Objective: β –thalassemia major is a common genetic disorder in Syria.

However, research reports related to characteristics of the dental arch of thalassemic patients is unavailable.

Therefore, this study was undertaken to investigate the characteristics and dimensions of the dental arch of β -thalassemia major patients and to compare findings with a group of unaffected subjects in the same age.

Materials and Methods: A total of 68 thalassemia Major subjects aged 8-12 years, from the Thalassemia Department of the Special Medical Care Center in Damascus, were asked to take part in this study.

After obtaining informed consent from all children and their parents, alginate impressions were taken for the both upper and lower dental arches.

Arch dimensions were measured on dental casts using a digital sliding caliper, and all measurements were recorded and compared with Syrian controls (n=100) in the same age group.

Results: Space analysis demonstrated that Thalassemic patients (males and females) developed a decreased posterior arch length of mandible in mixed dentition.

Also, dental models study showed statistically significant differences between the thalassemic males and control males in the scores of both of Pont’s analyses at (P-P) and (M-M).

Conclusions:No significant differences were found between thalassemic group and the Syrian norms in relation to the inter-premolar/primary first molar and inter-molar widths in mixed dentition.

However, reduced lower anchorage spaces of two sides were investigated between thalassemic children when compared to control.
