الملخص الإنجليزي

This is a across sectional household study aiming at exploring any increase in the incidence rate of cancer in Hay Al Khalij Al-Arabi area ( an area located in Basrah city centre ) in a response to aclaim introduced by its local Municipal Council in comparison to other areas in Basrah.

The study covers about 30% of the houses in this area , 746 houses inhabited by 3775 persons had been visited and interviewed about chronic diseases including cancer over 9 years recall period ( 2003-2011 ) and also on mortality and other relevant variables.

The results of the study revealed that the annual incidence rate of cancer is 144/100000 which was higher than the officially registered rate of 71 per 100000 population but lower than the incidence rate reported by another household study implemented for Basrah governorate as a whole that revealed 148 /100000.

The cancer prevalence rate according to this study was 397 per 100000 and the death rate was 52 per 100000.

The pattern and the topography of cancer in this study was not different from other studies done for Basrah governorate as a whole.

Some variables had been studied as possible risk factors for cancer in this area but the results didn’t reveal any significant finding other than the age ., even in regard to the issue mentioned in the claim ( scrub collection area ), I didn’t find any statistical relation with increasing cancer incidence
