الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims to investigate the usage of English tenses by Arab learners of English.

It has been noted that Arab students (non-native speakers of English) encounter serious problems while using English tenses.

Although they study English for many years, they don’t use English tenses properly.

Moreover, some tenses don’t appear in their writing or speech.

In this study the focus will mainly be on absolute tenses (present, past and future simple), vs.

relative tenses (present, past and future perfect).

One hundred and forty (140) subjects from Jordanian universities were involved in the study; fifty three (53) subjects were from Mu'tah University while seventy three (73) subjects were chosen from Arab Open University and fourteen (14) subjects were from Hashemite University.

The participants were asked to write a composition about their lives in the past, present and in the future.

Error Analysis approach was conducted in order to explore the most common errors made by the subjects.

It turned out that the majority of the subjects don't have the ability to distinguish between different types of tenses.

Moreover, most of them used absolute tenses and a minority used one type of relative tenses.

The most common tense errors which were found in the students essays included: tense-shift, verb-form, omission and tense confusion .These errors have been mainly due to both interlingual and intralingual transfer.
