الملخص الإنجليزي

This study aims at investigating causative constructions in both Arabic and English contrastively, emphasizing the problems that encounter the learners in expressing causativity.

Many examples from both languages were collected and analyzed to show the semantic and syntactic differences.

Such differences can be obviously noted when translating from Arabic into English or Vice versa .

There are three types of causative construction;lexical, morphological and periphrastic.

Arabic has all of these types which must be derived from the basic form of Arabic verb 'faʕala'(he-did).While Morphological causative in Arabic are formed either by gemination of the second radical consonant of the verb Form I or by adding the prefix (ʔa) to Form I ,periphrastic Arabic causative is restricted to the verb 'dʒaʕala' (he -made).

Arabic lexical causative involves verbs that are inherently causative, having the meaning ‘cause to X’.English ,on the other hand, is rich in all causative types with the majority of periphrastic causative verb like make or cause.

The findings of the study revealed that both English and Arabic differ in expressing and forming causativity.

This study will hopefully provide learners and teachers of English with useful instructions and recommendations regarding the suitable application of causativity in both languages.
