الملخص الإنجليزي

The present study aims at investigating the challenges facing Arabicspeaking English majors in using English negation.

The study also tries to find out the types of errors made by Arabic-speaking English majors when using English negation, and recognize the study group that commits more errors than other study groups.

To achieve the aims of the study, a test that consists of three parts was conducted on 92 Arabic-speaking English majors in the Department of English Language and Literature at Mu’tah University- Jordan.

Respondents were asked to negate a list of sentences.

It turned out that Arabic-speaking English majors face many challenges when using English negation such as double-negation and the misuse of some verbs in their negative forms.

However, the amount of challenges varies amongst the students in different levels.

First-year students committed the most errors.

Additionally, it was noticed that the effect of the students’ mother tongue- Arabic was the main reason behind the challenges facing those students.

In order to lessen those challenges, the study recommends the need for teaching intensive language courses at the Jordanian universities
